In the spirit of rides I'd like to take some day, check out the Fort Pierre to Deadwood Trail Ride.Held in honor of the 100 year anniversary of the trail closing, the ride's scheduled to start on July 29th, and follows a 200 mile long historic trail between the two South Dakota cities.
I suspect, given the terrain and rural locale, that there won't be live up-links to anyone's blog from the ride itself, but I'm hoping there's coverage in the news, or by some of the participants later, because it sure does look like fun!
If it rains, South Dakota gumbo will make things pretty sticky/slippery, and I'm guessing they'd have to stay up on gravel & blacktop. I hope they get good weather!

Wow - that sounds like SO MUCH FUN!! Will you ride or plan to ride in the future? We used to have small trail rides in Pike Road that were always a blast. Nothing in caparison to this though. I was always thankful to have Maggie since she wouldn't get upset about anything - especially the crazy people who would run their horses past everyone else at top speed....
There are some locals who are going on this. It sounded like an adventure for sure. They do have permission from several landowners to cross their land-trying to follow the old route as much as they can.
The route is one of the old oxen routes-apparently there were several different routes that left from Ft. Pierre to Deadwood.
One of the original routes went from Ft. Pierre to our ranch and then on to Deadwood. My great-grandfather had a trading post and that is how he got his supplies.
I really wish I did get to ride along, but not this time. It does look like it would be a lot of fun, doesn't it? I've been on a few shorter (2-3 days) rides - and it's amazing how quickly the horses figure out the routine.
